Don’t Rely on Luck: Celebrate Safely This St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day is a great opportunity to explore and enjoy local hotspots with good friends. When the festivities come to a close, the availability and affordability of transportation options is an important alternative to drunk driving.

In order to show how much Uber’s entry in markets has reduced local drunk driving, our team built a simple econometric model that uses publicly available data and looked at Seattle as an example city with the most readily available data. Every city differs, but we find that this research strongly suggests that there is a relationship between people’s decision to drink and drive and increased transit options. We estimate that the entrance of Uber in Seattle caused the number of arrests for DUI to decrease by more than 10%.

Another recent report we conducted in partnership with MADD reveals that when empowered with more options like Uber, people are making better choices that save lives. While we’ve still got a lot of work to do, we’re making progress together toward the goal of reliable rides and safer roads for everyone.

Whether you’re indulging in green beer or Irish car bombs, we urge everyone to celebrate safely. When you’re done celebrating, Uber will be there to help you get home.
