Overview of Safety

We are committed to the safety of everyone using Uber.  Our technology is built around safety features designed to protect riders and driver-partners before, during and after a trip in ways that others cannot.

We want to make sure riders and driver-partners are familiar with the features and how they work so they can take full advantage of these benefits.

Safety Starts Even Before A Ride Begins

No Trip Is Anonymous. When a driver-partner accepts a trip request, a rider typically sees his or her first name, photo, license plate number, and a picture of the vehicle. Riders can also review the driver’s rating to see if other riders have had a good experience with him or her.

Riders and drivers are also able to contact each other without providing personal information. We use technology to anonymize rider and driver phone numbers so they can call each other to confirm pick-up details without exchanging contact details going forward.

Street hails are prohibited. A ride can start the Uber app from anywhere and the app pinpoints their location. This lets riders request a ride from anywhere and wait safely indoors. Riders no longer have to wait on a corner in a dimly-lit or strange neighborhood and they can be sure the driver that picks them up has been screened using Uber’s extensive background check process.

Safety During the Ride

Uber operates as a cashless platform. This eliminates the risks and conflict that come with fare disputes, lack of cash, and fare evasion. It also reduces the risk of robberies since driver-partners do not need to carry large amounts of cash.

Riders can share the ETA and location with loved ones. Riders can also see the route on the map in the app.  The location is clearly marked so riders and those following their trip know where they are on their journey—and if they are on the right route.

Uber uses GPS to keep a record of where a driver goes during the ride. This creates accountability and a strong incentives for good behavior.

Safety Continues After the Ride Ends

Riders and drivers provide feedback after every trip. Our safety team reviews this information and investigates any issues.

Uber support is available 24/7. If something happens while in the car, our customer support staff are ready to respond 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If cases where law enforcement is involved, we work to get them the facts.

While no means of transportation can ever be 100% safe, we believe that Uber is a reliable, convenient way to get around.
