It’s no secret that Houston is one of the best cities in America for St. Patrick’s Day. The beloved annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade has been going strong for more than five decades, and it’s a splendid day out for the whole family that also happens to be free.
Of course, there’s more to the holiday than a parade or corned beef dinner, and that’s the hunt for an ever-elusive emerald elixir: green beer. There are plenty of great bars and restaurants that will be going full tilt with green beer this year and if you’re looking to make a whole day of it, consider requesting an reliable uberX to get you around.
Where to get green beer in Houston on St. Patrick’s Day:
1. Kenneally’s Irish Pub
Opened in 1983, Kenneally’s was recently voted Houston’s Best Irish Pub and Neighborhood Bar and they’re sparing no expense this St. Patty’s Day. Their 34th annual Under the Tent party will feature step dancers, bagpipers, stew, Guinness bread, and of course, green beer. They’ll even be serving up some of their famous Chicago-style thin crust pizza. If you want to get started a day early on St. Patty’s eve, the Houston-based rock band Blaggards will perform their brand of “stout, Irish rock.”
2. The Goose’s Acre
The Goose’s Acre might be the only authentic European pub in all of Houston. That’s because a great deal of this century-old bar was literally shipped across the Atlantic Ocean direct from County Cork in Ireland after the original Goose was forced to close down. Today the pub offers a wide variety of Irish cuisine but this holiday, be sure to get their Irish nachos and wash it down with a Black and Tan.
3. McElroy’s Pub
Opened by Dublin native John McElroy, McElroy’s Pub in Houston’s Inner Loop is the spot for darts and a perfectly poured Guinness. Nestled amidst the museum and theater districts, McElroy’s is the ideal lounge for kicking your feet up and doing prime people-watching downtown. There’s even an outdoor beer garden where you can find plenty of craft beer and some truly great scotch.
4. Molly’s Pub
The party happening at Molly’s Pub this year will include green beer along with green jello shots. With several locations throughout the greater Houston area, you won’t be left wanting for Irish stew or shepherd’s pie. And if that’s not enough, there’ll be plenty of bagpipers to serenade you. If you feel like skipping the green Harp, shoot for one of their signature cocktails, like the Blind Russian or a remixed White Russian with a nip of Baileys.
5. Pimlico Irish Pub
Pubs must run in Irish families because Pimlico was opened by a Dublin native and named for his father’s bar that was just around the corner from the Guinness Brewery. If you’re looking for a two-week party, get on down to Pimlico when the festivities start counting down on March 1. On the day of days, there’ll be plenty of barbecue, music by Soulshine, and of course, green beer. Best of all, there’s no cover.
6. The Gorgeous Gael
Named for boxer and actor Jack Doyle, The Gorgeous Gael is the place to go in Rice Village for craft beer and Irish whiskey. Formerly called Brian O’Neill’s, this bar recently underwent a makeover and rebranding, and bar-goers couldn’t be more happy with the results of this cozy gastropub. We’d be remiss if we didn’t recommend their over-the-top, slow-cooked, fall-off-the-bone confit wings while you’re sipping on 12-year Tullamore D.E.W.
