Meet Amy: Retired School Teacher, Dog Groomer, Uber Partner — #WomenMoveUs

In celebration of International Women’s Day, we are highlighting the amazing women in our community. #WomenMoveUs

Amy’s been an Uber partner for only a few months. If you’ve had the chance to take a ride with her around the suburbs, you’ll notice that she never stops smiling. We got a chance to take a walk around the neighborhood with Amy and her pup, Lola to learn more about her roots, her passions and what drives her every day. #WomenMoveUs

Name: Amy

Age: 53

Job: Retired Elementary School Teacher. Dog groomer. Mother. Uber Partner

Favorite Hobbies: Being around my dog, crocheting and techy things related to all of the latest and greatest technologies.

Describe Yourself in One Word: Adventurous. I hiked the Himalayas 180 miles in 30 days, so that must count for something!

When you were a child, what did you imagine you’d be doing as an adult? I wanted to be Mary Poppins, which could be why I became a school teacher.

What defines a powerful woman? Smart and intuitive. When you combine your intelligence with female intuition, that’s powerful. And when it works out in your favor, it’s brilliant.

Who is a female role model in your life? My mom, for sure. She had drive and moxie. Growing up, she accomplished anything she ever set her mind to, whether it was running the nearby private school or building a bookcase from scratch.

As a powerful woman, what drives you? Being independent and not taking life too seriously. My perspective on life is to not sweat the small stuff. If you looked at every obstacle as a stepping stone to your success, it’s much easier to get there.

Why do you drive with Uber? I love the independence of having a job that allows me to work from home, instead of your average 9-5. It gives me a ton of time to spend with my daughter when she comes home from school. There’s not many jobs where you get the chance to do that.

What career advice would you give other women? Don’t give in to the status quo, ever. Push through anything or anyone who tells you that you can’t follow your dreams. You deserve so much more.

How are you going to celebrate International Women’s Day? I’m going to take my daughter out to lunch. I recently learned that she’s ranked #1 out of 464 people in her class. I may be bragging, but what a great excuse!
