#WhyIDrive, Veterans Day Edition

This Veterans Day, we want to thank those who have gone above and beyond in their service to our country. You are the reason we enjoy our freedom and we’re thankful for you today and every day.

Below, we’d like to introduce you to a couple of special UberMILITARY driver-partners here in Ohio. Meet John, a veteran and father, and Natalie, a military spouse and mother. Both gave us a few minutes of their time to share why they drive with Uber.

Meet John

After using Uber as a rider for some time, John decided to switch seats and begin driving with Uber in May 2016, shortly after settling down with his family in Ohio. Between pursuing his business entrepreneurship degree at Xavier and supporting his wife and two children at home, John has found that driving 3-4 days a week is a great opportunity to earn supplemental income.

Q: What’s a typical day like for you?
A: I’m attending school at Xavier, finishing my degree in business entrepreneurship. My wife is a cheerleading coach. We have two kids, so I drive from midnight to early morning.

Q: Tell us about your time in the service.
A: I was in for 8 years as an intelligence analyst, stationed in Hawaii. I was based in Pearl Harbor and last year I moved to Cincinnati.

Q: What does your extra income go towards?
A: Over the summer it was a great way to fill in while my wife was off work having a baby. Now it’s for extra spending money and tools—supplemental income.

Q: How does Uber fit in for the military lifestyle?
A: It works out really well because there’s no 8-5 schedule. You never know when you’ll get called into work. Uber is a quick, easy way to pay off extra bills. Military comes first and you have to drop everything at a moment’s notice. With Uber you can do that—change your schedule on your own time.

Meet Natalie

Natalie began driving with Uber last November, almost one year ago to the day, after her nephew informed her of the opportunity and her son referred her!

Q: What is a typical week like for you?
A: I usually drive 4 times per week around 6am-9:30am. My husband is an injured vet and I take care of him. I spend the rest of the day with my granddaughter. I have three older kids and three grandchildren.

Q: Tell us about your husband’s time in the service.
A: My husband was in service for 10 years. It was hard on the family while he was living overseas. When he was in Iraq, my oldest son was really there for me and we would try to encourage each other.

Q: What does your extra income go towards?
A: Vacation money. My family and I went Hollywood, Wisconsin, and Chicago this year but I’m not planning to go anywhere until after Christmas.

Q: How does Uber fit in for military families?
A: I like that you can drive with Uber everywhere. I drive in Dayton, Kentucky, and Cincinnati.  I travel to Chicago a lot, so I might like to Uber there too. It’s cool because I meet the most amazing riders that are just awesome. You get to meet great people!

We are proud to have John and Natalie on the roads in Ohio, as well as the many other veterans across country who have chosen to partner with Uber. If you see them on the road, be sure to say hi!
