UN Women + Uber = Vision for Equality

In 1995, world leaders followed a call by the United Nations and gathered in Beijing to produce an unprecedented plan for advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women everywhere.

Today, on the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, we are proud to share with The Uber Community that we are embarking on a new global partnership with UN Women with the goal of accelerating economic opportunity for women. As part of our commitment to this goal, Uber will create 1,000,000 jobs for women as drivers on the Uber platform by 2020.

Women in North Carolina are already taking advantage of the safe, flexible and equitable earning opportunities offered by the Uber platform. Katherine and Christina are just two of our committed women partners providing exceptional service and experiences on the road. Here are their stories:

Why do you partner with Uber?

I started with Uber at first just to pick up some extra money to help make ends meet at home. Over the past four months, though, as I drove more and more, I’ve become more excited to help people safely get where they need to go.

As a woman, how has partnering with Uber empowered you to achieve your goals?

As I’ve continued to partner with Uber, I’ve heard women tell me how comfortable they are with me as their driver. It’s encouraging to make them feel safe, and the men that ride with me trust me too. Everyone who rides with me has been completely respectful. Women and men alike share with me how Uber has changed their lifestyle so they no longer have to worry about drinking and driving—and with Uber being so affordable, they never have to take that risk.

The stories they share with me make it seem like we’ve been friends forever, even when rides often only take ten minutes. Partnering with Uber has not only helped me make ends meet for my family—it’s become a great outlet for me to meet new people.

When you’re not driving, what are you doing?

I host an online radio show and run a towel service for hair salons.

What are your tips and tricks for success?

Do what you love to do and be fully present. I know that may sound cliche, but I’m never on the phone when there is a customer in the car and I always provide great service. I believe in giving my full attention to riders, and as a result I get to have great conversations and experiences along the way. Just be there, show up, and get the full experience. That’s what makes you successful, because opportunities you didn’t know were there can show up when you make the effort to pay attention.

Why do you partner with Uber?

I’m a mother of two and work a full-time job Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm. I was looking for a flexible part time job that allowed me to work around my full-time job, my daughters’ soccer games and other family commitments. Partnering with Uber has allowed me to have a flexible schedule, work for myself, and set my own hours. If I need to take a Saturday afternoon off to go to a soccer game with my daughter, I have 100% flexibility to do so.

Additionally, my husband is a disabled veteran who suffers from several health issues. These issues prevent him from holding a regular job, but Uber is the perfect situation for him and our family. He’s able to drive when he wants, yet take breaks when he’s having a tough time without fear of “losing” his income.  We are a husband and wife Uber dynamic duo. Partnering with Uber has given him a purpose and the motivation he has not had in years. It’s great for all of us that he’s again able to provide for his family.

As a woman, how has partnering with Uber empowered you to achieve your goals?

Before Uber, we were reliant on only my income and a small disability payment my husband receives. Now, the money we make from partnering with Uber is helping my husband and I pay off our heath care and credit card bills. We are also looking forward to completing some long-standing home improvement projects this spring and summer, and hopefully even get to take a vacation!

What are your tips and tricks for success?

My main key is to always be on time. I have water bottles available for my riders and call them to make sure I’m in the right spot so I don’t leave them waiting. I make sure I keep my car clean at all times and try to be as nice and courteous as possible to provide excellent customer service.
