Help A Child Start the School Year Right

It’s that time of year again. We wave goodbye to pool parties and backyard barbecues, and get the kids ready for their first day of school and to break out the books. But for more than 4,700 homeless students enrolled in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, the back-to-school necessities are not always readily available, and preparing for their first day of school is not always that simple.

This year, join Uber and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist of the Charlotte Hornets in giving back to our community by hosting a school supplies drive in your office, with your religious or service organization, or with your intramural team buddies—anyone is welcome to participate! Along with Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, we’ll come by to collect donations from the first 20 groups that pledge to contribute 40 or more items from our school supplies list.

“I’m honored to be partnering with Uber on this great cause to collect back to school items for A Child’s Place,” said Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. “Thank you in advance to the city of Charlotte for your generous donations. I’m looking forward to August 21.”

  • Fill out this form by 3 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13. Hurry! Spots will fill up quickly.
  • We will send over a custom UberSCHOOL supplies drive kit to help you spread the word and easily collect your items.
  • We will be back in touch by Tuesday, August 19 to schedule a pickup for some time on Thursday, August 21.
  • On Thursday, August 21, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and our UberSCHOOL team will stop by to pick up your items. Get ready for photos, autographs and all kinds of fun. We can’t wait to thank you!

We will deliver all donations to our local partner, A Child’s Place—an organization working to erase the impact of homelessness on children and their education. Rather than parents needing to choose between fulfilling their family’s basic needs and purchasing school supplies, A Child’s Place hopes to provide the children in its program with all necessary back-to-school items.

A Child’s Place is in need of:

  • School uniforms sized 6-14 kids (collared shirts in white or navy, shorts in khaki or navy)
  • Middle school-size backpacks
  • Pencils, markers, erasers, scissors
  • Folders, binders, 3-5 subject notebooks
  • Hand sanitizer, mini tissues
  • A full list of needed items can be found here

We hope you’ll join us in supporting A Child’s Place!
