The Weekender: Staycations

In New York, we know summer as that time of year when we all try to skip town and leave the city behind us. We book flights, rent cars, and take trains, with plans of vacationing in Maine, escaping to the Berkshires, or beaching in the Hamptons. But the truth is, sometimes you’re left sitting in traffic, or you save all your money for one big trip and get stuck penny-pinching for the rest of the summer. For these reasons, you may want to consider a wonderful alternative called the Staycation. There is no shame in booking a hotel or Airbnb in your own city and embracing the tourist life. This week we’re sharing our favorite NYC Staycation options for the local explorer.

  • Ride off into the sunset: Nestled right in the heart of Williamsburg, the Urban Cowboy Bed & Breakfast is the ultimate spot for a quick urban retreat. Choose from a variety of bedroom options (including an Adirondack-style cabin with pot belly wood stove and antler light fixture) and feel right at home in the renovated Brooklyn townhouse. The space is beautifully decorated with Western Native American elements and repurposed furniture that was brought in all the way from Ohio, where the Urban Cowboy himself, Lyon Porter, is from. Inspired by his trip to surf Mecca Maderas Village in Nicaragua, Lyon wanted to create a similar respite for both travelers and locals to gather, relax, share a beer, break bread, and feel at home. While there may not be surfing, they do at least of a hot tub. Hey, we’ll take it. For a list of the Urban Cowboy’s curated recommendations for staycationers and vacationers alike, click here.
  • Get some wind in your hair and salt on your skin: Maybe that private sail across the Mediterranean is a bit out of reach, but a of couple nights on a yacht with some nautical charm and a mahogany paneled salon is actually quite doable. Book a night or two on this Arctic exploration vessel through Airbnb for a unique staycation right in Red Hook. Relax in the wood burning sauna or sun bathe on the deck before walking over to one of Red Hook’s neighborhood restaurants. The boat remains docked, but between the soaring views of Manhattan and the salty air, you’ll still get a rewarding sense of escape. And — there’s also the perk of not getting sea sick.
  • Embark on an Urban Tour: Let The Viceroy Hotel plan out your staycation for you when you book their Urban Tour room package. The Urban Tour is complete with a suggested itinerary and $100 of Uber credit so you can ride in style to each destination. Some featured to-do’s include checking out fashion paradise Dover Street Market, getting cocktails at Raines Law Room, and grabbing a slice at Motorino Pizza.
  • Have a onefinestay-cation: Treat yourself to a luxurious stay in a TriBeCa loft or a townhouse in Boerum Hill by booking through onefinestay. Choose an unchartered NYC neighborhood and pick an apartment there for the weekend. Strolling through a new neighborhood in New York can sometimes be just as exciting as a visiting a different city. Embrace what we have right here in NYC!

Whether you hang with the Brooklyn Cowboys, aboard a yacht in Red Hook, or make up your own version of a staycation — we hope riding with Uber NYC makes your local getaway feel a bit more like traveling first class.
