On the Road With… Shaprece

There are two days left of this year’s CMJ Music Marathon here in NYC. The five-day music festival highlights up-and-coming artists from all over the country, and today we’re catching up with one of them—Shaprece.

A Seattle native, Shaprece is stomping around NYC this week, enjoying her first CMJ Music Marathon. Last night she performed at The Paper Box, and tonight she’ll be doing a private performance as part of Sofar Sounds. Read on to learn more about Shaprece and then check out her music here.

How did you get your career start? I started collaborating with local Seattle musicians and it pushed me in the right direction for my solo endeavors.

What does your typical day look like? Work, work, work, work, work, relax, work some more. Repeat.

Where can we typically find you on your day off? Skipping about, amongst the forest.

What’s your favorite venue you’ve ever played at? (Or your top three…) The Paramount Theater in Seattle, WA with Fresh Espresso in 2010. Breathtaking venue, to say the least.

Do you have a favorite track you’ve produced? Or one you are most proud of? I don’t have an exact one that I fancy over the others. I tend to always favor the latest song that we produce and record, mainly because I feel that our sound is ever-evolving.

Who were your musical inspirations growing up? The first person to ever make me want to pursue a career in music was Stevie Wonder. I fell in love with his approach and total understanding of the human emotion. Still one of my greatest inspirations to this day.

What songs or artists are currently on your playlist? That’s a pretty long list but my top 5 go-to artists are Bjork, James Blake, Solange, Kanye, and Sade.

If you could collaborate with one artist, who would it be? Damon Albarn.

Is this the first time you’ve participated in CMJ? It is, indeed… Super exciting!

What’s on your to-do list while you’re in NYC? Sing songs as often as possible.

What’s the most common Uber trip you take? Pretty much any time that I’m out partying or going to shows. Much safer for everyone that way!

What’s the best experience you’ve ever had in an Uber? Every experience has been pleasant… I have yet to come across a rude Uber driver.

What’s next for Shaprece? Continuing to work as hard as possible and getting ready for 2015—enjoying the ride along the way.
