On the Road with…Jesse Boykins III
Writing, singing, performing, traveling — Jesse Boykins III is constantly working and moving. The Brooklyn-based soul singer and songwriter likes to stay busy. This week we’re on the road with Jesse to learn a bit more about his style and life in New York City and how Uber fits in.
How did you get your career start? In earnest, it began after college. I was playing shows around NYC and people started to notice. That was about 2007.
What does your typical day look like? LOTS of meetings, connecting with people all over the city to build my brand.
What are your 3 NYC go-to spots (restaurants, bars, museums, clubs, etc.)? Gogo Thai, Red Bull Studio Space and Madison Square Park for people watching.
Where can we typically find you on your day off? At the movies!
What’s your favorite venue you’ve ever played at? (Or your top three…) I just played the Essence Festival at the Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans. The venue, the staff, and the sound was amazing.
How would you describe your style? Free and bohemian chic.
Who were your musical inspirations growing up? Bob Marley, the Beatles, and Michael Jackson.
What songs or artists are currently on your playlist? Little Dragon, some Drake, Lorde, Usher, Kat Dahlia, Justin Timberlake, and Bieber — and Kanye everyday.
If you could collaborate with one artist – who would it be? Kanye West.
What’s the most common Uber trip you take? Late nights back to the crib.
What’s the best experience you’ve ever had in an Uber? The time that lady picked me up in a Hummer.
What are you looking forward to most about this summer? Outdoor festivities.
