Since her first breakout hit “American Boy” in 2008, this British Woman has continued to rock the music scene with a number of hits, ranging from soul and reggae to hip-hop and dance. And with the recent Valentine’s Day release of her fourth album, True Romance, it is clear that Estelle has no plans to slow down.
We caught up with the prolific singer/songwriter as she’s in town hitting the NYFW scene and promoting her new album. Read on to learn more about Estelle.
How did you get your career start? I started in London in 1998 as an independent artist. At that time I was recording with my own label. Eventually, I signed to British label V2 before then coming to the U.S. via John Legend’s Homeschool Records.
What does your typical day look like? Days could start with 6am flights to do shows or visit radio stations, and end with late night parties or lounging in my bed. It varies— with food in between.
What are your New York Fashion Week plans? Attending any cool shows? BCBG and DVF, among others. Fashion week is always very busy for me.
What fashion trends are you currently excited about? The trench coat trend. I love trench coats and long jackets.
What are your 3 NYC go-to spots (restaurants, museums, bars, clubs)? The Met—I could get lost in there for a day. Fedora (a bar in LES) and the rooftop at Catch (you can eat food downstairs and party upstairs).
Where can we typically find you on your day off? At home cooking, sleeping, or reading.
What was your inspiration for creating True Romance? My inspiration came from where I am presently in life—not happily married, and not unhappy—just single and trying to figure myself out.
What does this album say about you at this stage of your career? That I’ve done pretty well! It’s my fourth album. Most people don’t get a second, so it feels great that people still relate.
Who were your musical inspirations growing up? Missy Elliot—groundbreaking! Also, Mary J. Blige and Ella Fitzgerald.
What’s the most common Uber trip you take? To the airport!
What’s the best experience you’ve ever had in an Uber? In New York during fashion week, the UberBLACK service is always awesome!
What’s next for Estelle? Expanding my accessories, working on my home decor line, Swaray, and more acting in general—and voice acting!
Whether you’re a freshman or a senior headed back to campus this fall, one thing is certain—you’ll need to eat. And there is nothing worse than being limited to questionable cafeteria food or taking a chance on expired leftovers in the back of the fridge. The best news? UberEATS is expanding to 30+ major college campuses by the end of the year, from Penn State to LSU to Boise State. Since we want you to focus on what you love about college and not worry about your next meal, we’re predicting the 5 times you’ll need to order UberEATS this semester.
We are excited to surpass the 100th city mark by welcoming two Brazilian cities, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte, to the UberEATS family. We’re excited to expand the Uber for Business platform beyond business travel, to include a world-class customer transportation solution, Uber Central.
