Meet Your Messenger: Chandra
This week, we launched UberRUSH — a reliable ride for your deliveries. We want to introduce you to the men and women who will be coming into your homes and offices to transport your precious cargo.
Part bike messenger, part personal trainer, part fashion designer, Chandra is the full package (logistics pun half intended). But how did this Jill-of-all trades come to the courier world? We caught up with her to find out.
Where are you from originally? Sunny South Florida
How did you end up in New York? I came to NYC to get a degree in fashion design and ended up staying for a while.
How’d you get into bike messengering? I realized I had a cycling problem when I started spending all of my disposable income on bike parts. This past summer I roadtripped across the country for a month. When I was on the road it dawned on me that I’d regret it if I didn’t cash in on my skills while I lived here. When I returned to the city, jobless, I started picking up shifts.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever delivered? There’s been a lot of weird ones. Once I had to deliver a giant display board that looked like a giant paddle from Soho to 117th street. It was about 4′ tall and made out of a dense 1.5″ thick wood. Let me paint the picture for you: a tall thin girl cycling through Manhattan with a giant paddle strapped to her back. It was a conversation starter to say the least. I’ve never heard so many bad jokes in one bike ride.
Where are we most likely find you on your down time? On an adventure … or exploring … or maybe hanging from my ceiling (I might or might not have a Lara-Croft-style setup).
What’s your favorite area of the city? Chinatown. It’s always an experience.
What’s the most interesting place you’ve ever delivered to? I don’t think I can disclose. It might be top secret.
Does your bike have a name? ‘My boyfriend’ (It’s a joke that stuck.)
