UN Women + Uber = Vision for Equality

In 1995, world leaders followed a call by the United Nations and gathered in Beijing to produce an unprecedented plan for advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women everywhere. Today, on the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, we are proud to share with The Uber Community that we are embarking on a new global partnership with UN Women with the goal of accelerating economic opportunity for women. As part of our commitment to this goal, Uber will create 1,000,000 jobs for women as drivers on the Uber platform by 2020.

Women in Maryland are already taking advantage of the safe, flexible and equitable earning opportunities offered by the Uber platform. Amber, one of our top partners, is a full time mother of two and has experienced firsthand how Uber has given her the opportunity to be a successful businesswoman, mother and friend all at the same time. Here’s her story.

When Amber and her family moved to Baltimore one thing was clear – family came first. Flexibility was key when Amber started her job search, so when the opportunity to apply to Uber was presented to her it became the perfect solution!

Why did you decide to partner with Uber? My partner also works with Uber. I saw how hassle-free the application process was for him and knew it would be perfect for me. The last time I had a full-time job was in 2012 when I had my first child, so there was a lapse in my work history. This didn’t matter when I applied to Uber, and I was able to start working within weeks.

Why do you enjoy driving with Uber? The flexibility: I wish more people could go to work with a push of a button! I’ve always known that no matter where my career path took me, I wanted to be in a position to interact with people. With Uber and a simple tap of the app, I’m introduced to new and interesting people every day.

What’s the best ride you’ve provided? All my rides are great! I can’t pick just one.

If you could take an Uber trip with anyone, who would it be? Toni Morrison. She recently said there is only one race, the human race. Anything else is socially constructed and isn’t real. I’m reminded of these wise words every day, and would love the opportunity to listen to her wisdom.

Do you have any tips for fellow businesswomen? Tune-in (literally!) Always have a good playlist. Music can lift riders’ spirits, and it’s the best road buddy you could ask for.
