UN Women + Uber = Vision for Equality

In 1995, world leaders followed a call by the United Nations and gathered in Beijing to produce an unprecedented plan for advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women everywhere.

Today, on the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, we are proud to share that we are embarking on a new global partnership with UN Women with the goal of accelerating economic opportunity for women. As part of our commitment to this goal, Uber will create 1,000,000 jobs for women as drivers on the Uber platform by 2020.

Women in Tampa Bay are already taking advantage of the safe, flexible and equitable earning opportunities offered by the Uber platform. Charlene, a top partner, served 20 years in the Air Force Reserve, owns a local cafe, and is a dedicated mother of three. Here’s how Charlene empowers herself and others via Uber:

Why did you decide to partner with Uber?

I’m a small business owner and I partner with Uber to supplement my income. I have one child in high school and two children in college; my college-age son is pursuing electrical engineering, and my daughter is training to become a surgical technician.

Why do you enjoy driving for Uber?

I just have that entrepreneurial spirit, and like being able to make my own money on my own terms.

It’s contagious once you start driving. I feel like I’m giving back to the community because some of the people are going out to have a good time and I’m preventing them from getting DUIs. I like being a part of that.

What’s the best ride you’ve provided?

I picked up a young lady who I believe was on her way to her probation officer. Because she lives in such close proximity to me, I drove her three different times over a few weeks. I felt that I was able to mentor her, because maybe she didn’t have that in her life at the moment.

“I was trying to convey to her that in life, the sky is the limit.”
  – Charlene, Uber Partner

I really did enjoy those rides. That young lady sticks out in my mind – I still think about her sometimes.
