Tampa Bay Driver-Partners Pledge to Help Reduce Drunk Driving

In 2014, from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve, 945 lives were lost across the country from drunk driving-related accidents. Uber is committed to working alongside organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to eliminate drunk driving by providing safe and reliable transportation options for the members of the Tampa Bay community.

DRIVER-PARTNERS PLEDGE TO HELP TAMPA BAY RIDE SAFE

At the forefront of our effort to eliminate drunk driving are the thousands of local Uber driver-partners in the Tampa Bay area. Last week, over 150 of Uber’s top driver-partners gathered at the Epicurean Hotel in Tampa to celebrate Uber’s partnership with MADD and pledge to do their part to eliminate drunk driving.

“Since Uber came to Hillsborough County 18 months ago, we’ve seen a more than 14 percent reduction in drunk driving deaths,” says Bianca Kendall, manager of MADD’s West Central Florida chapter.

Reinforcing their commitment to serving the Tampa Bay community, the driver-partners attending last week’s event signed a pledge (found in full below) to complete 50 trips during the late-night hours, starting on New Year’s Eve and extending through Gasparilla (in late January).

The Tampa Bay community is requesting rides through the Uber platform at times—namely, late at night—when tragic incidents due to drunk driving are most likely to occur. Driver-partners providing rides during those times are directly enabling riders to make the responsible decision to not drink and drive.

RIDE WITH UBER TO ELIMINATE DRUNK DRIVING

Uber is also offering riders the opportunity to help support MADD’s efforts. For every new rider that signs up to ride with Uber using the promo code MADDTB, Uber will donate $5 to MADD West Central Florida. If you want to help, share this code with any friends who may not already have Uber accounts and encourage them to sign up.

I commit to start the new year right by keeping everyone on the roads safe headed into 2016. I pledge to provide 50 safe and reliable late night rides during this time of celebration for the city, starting on NYE and extending through Gasparilla at the end of January.
