UN Women + Uber = Vision for Equality

In 1995, world leaders followed a call by the United Nations and gathered in Beijing to produce an unprecedented plan for advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women everywhere.

Today, on the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, we are proud to share with The Uber Community that we are embarking on a new global partnership with UN Women with the goal of accelerating economic opportunity for women. As part of our commitment to this goal, Uber will create 1,000,000 jobs for women as drivers on the Uber platform by 2020.

Women across the DMV are already taking advantage of the safe, flexible and equitable earning opportunities offered by the Uber platform. Catherine, one of our top uberX partners, has experienced firsthand how Uber has given her the opportunity to be a successful businesswoman. Here’s her story.

What did you do before Uber?
I was in the mortgage banking industry for years, and six weeks after I started driving Uber, I walked into the office and said, “See you guys! I’m done.”

Why do you enjoy driving with Uber?
With Uber, I can wear what I want; I can work when I want; I can go online and offline whenever I want; I have no meetings. I trust Uber, I know it’s an extremely efficient company and I appreciate that in a partner.

What’s the best ride you’ve provided?
I’ve had so many great trips! Everyone has a story and is great to talk to. My all time favorite riders has been John Mather – the Noble Prize winner in Physics whose work contributed to the big-bang theory of the universe. It was amazing! Next to him, giving Beyonce’s producer a ride was also pretty cool.

If you could take an Uber trip with any famous person, who would it be and why?
Jack Nicholson! Without a doubt. I just love him! He has such a dark comedy and I feel like I could learn so much from him. You know the saying Si jeunesse savait, si vieillesse pouvait? Well it means, “If youth only knew; if old age only could.” I’ve always loved that and for some reason I just think that I could learn so much from someone older that has lived such a life like he has.
