Uber Rider Onesie!

We love launching a new Uber city by having a special Rider Zero on board for the city’s first ride, but last week, we had perhaps our most special first ride – Deven Tolia, Uber Rider Onesie.

Deven aka Rider Onesie

Born at 8:15pm on Thursday July 26th, Deven took his first ever Uber ride just under two days later – no doubt our youngest and cutest rider.

Once upon a time.

Good friends Travis Kalanick, Uber CEO, and Nirav Tolia, Nextdoor CEO,  were on a plane talking about how Nirav would soon be a father. Travis casually mentioned that there have been stories of expecting mothers taking Uber to the hospital when in labor and of babies coming home from the hospital in Ubers. To this, Nirav suggested to Travis “You should give those babies onesies!”. That’s when the lightbulb burst above Travis’ head and he dreamt up the Uber Rider Onesie.

From there it was only a couple short weeks, a rush-ordered onesie and two Uber rides from becoming reality.

A chariot fit for a prince.

Nirav’s wife Megha took a ride with driver Vania to the California Pacific Medical Center on Thursday.

Later that morning, Nirav took an Uber roundtrip home to grab some overnight bags and on Saturday afternoon, the Tolia family, complete with 7-pound, 6-ounce baby Deven, headed home with driver Jamal.

Speaking on Deven’s ride home, Nirav said it was “safe, secure, efficient; everything we’ve come to expect from Uber” adding that in his experience, drivers go out of their way to make sure rides are pleasant and safe. That’s why, as he put it, he and Megha “felt comfortable taking Uber with the most important cargo of our lives.”

As for how Deven will feel when he looks back on all this, Nirav said, “He will be extremely proud to be the first rider onesie and it might just be one of the highlights of his birth – and something he will use many times to endear himself to people who love Uber.” Suffice it to say, we’re already endeared 🙂
