UN Women + Uber = Vision for Equality

In 1995, world leaders followed a call by the United Nations and gathered in Beijing to produce an unprecedented plan for advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women everywhere.

Today, on the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, we are proud to share with The Uber Community that we are embarking on a new global partnership with UN Women with the goal of accelerating economic opportunity for women. As part of our commitment to this goal, Uber will create 1,000,000 jobs for women as drivers on the Uber platform by 2020.

Women in the Bay Area are already taking advantage of the safe, flexible and equitable earning opportunities offered by the Uber platform. April, one of our top partners, has been driving in San Francisco since August 2014. Here’s her story.
What did you do before driving with Uber?
I was a property manager for Public Storage. I was with them for 7 years.

I’m now selling Corvettes down the peninsula. They had this posting and I thought I’d stop by, and it’s worked out. I’ve been at Boardwalk Chevrolet in Redwood City for about 2 months.

Why did you decide to partner with Uber?
My friends had been telling me about it for a few months. I didn’t know Uber existed, and they said you should drive with Uber. My car, I’ve always kept it clean. And I’m a good driver.

Why do you enjoy driving with Uber?
I wanted to get to learn the city in detail. I’m coming from Golden Gate, so most of the time I pick up people from the Marina or Cow Hollow and then I find myself downtown, learning all the one-way streets down there.

I like talking to riders. To me, it’s kind of awkward when people don’t talk.
What are your tricks or tips for success?
I have a 9-to-5 job, so I just turn the app on before work or after work.

Before work, there are usually people headed to SFO. That’s really benefited me, because I just pick them up in San Francisco and drive down there with them. It’s half my commute down to Redwood City, since I’m coming from Mill Valley through San Francisco.
