Uber London: fully compliant and standing by our partner-drivers

At the heart of Uber’s model is our commitment to providing choice and value for riders and economic opportunities for thousands of drivers, without whom our service would not be possible.

Like all private hire operators, Uber is regulated by TfL and we have met their requirements at every stage. Following another round of scrutiny, Uber has yet again been confirmed by TfL as fully compliant with the law.  This announcement is a victory for common sense, technology, innovation – and, above all, London.

TfL has also made its view clear that Uber’s smartphone app is not a taximeter, and Uber welcomed their decision to refer it to the High Court for final clarity on the issue, given that this in everyone’s interests. We are disappointed but sadly unsurprised that the LTDA has undermined this legal process by issuing summonses against a small number of partner-drivers. This obstructive action has stopped the High Court process in its tracks, as these cases must be resolved first, prolonging the process for many months. While we’re very confident that common sense will prevail, we think it is deeply unfair to drag a few individuals into a long drawn-out legal process for the sake of vested interests.

Uber is proud to work with the partner-drivers on its platform, and we hear inspirational stories every day of how drivers are using the opportunity and flexibility provided by Uber to build their own business, fund further education, or spend more time with their loved ones. Needless to say, we stand behind these drivers completely and wholeheartedly and will give them all the support they need, including covering all legal costs.

We strongly believe you shouldn’t block the path of progress. London is fast becoming the tech capital of Europe and Uber is proud to be playing its part in that journey, improving the lives of Londoners along the way – riders and drivers alike.
