UberPool Beta FAQ

Thanks for joining us for the UberPool beta! UberPool provides the same convenience and reliability of uberX, but allows you to share the ride—and the cost—with another person who just happens to be requesting a ride along a similar route. This is an early beta product, and there will undoubtedly be kinks and surprises to work through, so please see below for answers to some frequently asked questions about how to use UberPool during the beta period.

What is UberPool?

UberPool is a new option that lets you share your ride, and share the cost, with someone else nearby. We’ll match you with another rider taking a similar route and you’ll each pay only for your portion of the trip. That means you still get the convenience and reliability you’re used to with Uber, but at the lowest price possible.

How does UberPool work?

UberPool works like the other Uber options, with a few key differences:

  • Your destination is required because we use it to match you with another rider heading along a similar route
  • You cannot change your pickup location or destination after you request, and each rider can have only one destination
  • As a courtesy to your co-rider, your driver will only wait two minutes at each pickup location
  • At up to 40% less than uberX, it’s our cheapest Uber yet!

Once you’ve been matched with a co-rider, you’ll receive a notification with that rider’s name and who’s being picked up first. To ensure there’s room for everyone, right now we can only have one rider per pickup, and no pets (except service animals, of course).

When can I use UberPool?

UberPool is rolling out to the public as a beta test on August 15th. Please help us continue to improve the experience by sending your feedback to support@uber.com.

What type of car will I get?

You’ll share one of the vehicles that’s otherwise available on uberX or uberXL.

How is my co-rider chosen?

Co-riders are matched according to similar pickup locations and destinations.

Can I bring other people?

To make sure there’s enough room for everyone, right now we can only allow one rider per pickup.

Can I bring luggage?

Yes, but remember there will need to be room for another person and their belongings in the car.

How much will it cost?

Initially, UberPool will cost up to 40% less than uberX for the same trip. Fares are calculated based on pickup location and destination. In San Francisco, that means a ride from the Castro to the Financial District would cost about $6, and from Sunset to SOMA about $10.

How long will it take? Will I go out of my way?

We match riders in a way that does not significantly increase total trip time. If there is no rider near you with a similar route, you’ll get a solo ride with a discounted fare.

How long will the driver wait?

Please be prepared to meet your driver as soon as the car arrives. As a courtesy to your co-rider, your driver will only wait 2 minutes.

I was picked up first—why was I dropped off second?

We map the route to be the most efficient possible. That means that sometimes you will be picked up first and dropped off second, but your total trip time will be minimized.

What happens if I cancel?

Cancellations impact both your co-rider and your driver, so please try to avoid them. If you must cancel more than 5 minutes after requesting, you will be charged a $5 fee.

Can I change my destination or pickup location?

Because we use your pickup location and destination when matching you with another rider, you cannot change either once you’ve requested the trip.
