Uber and MADD Celebrate Three Years Together

Many of us are enjoying the long days of summer, featuring warm nights, cookouts and family vacations. However, the summer holiday is also known as the ‘100 deadliest days on the road,’ which falls between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.

With all the carefree days ahead, we want to make sure drunk driving and road safety are top of mind. That’s why three years ago we partnered with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to help raise the awareness of this public safety issue and urge people to get a designated driver. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 32% of drivers involved in fatal crashes at night were drunk.

Together with MADD, we have focused our efforts on making sure people know there are a host of options for getting home safely. Technology has made it easier than ever to get a safe ride home. Here are tips from MADD’s volunteers and team members from across the country on how to be safe this summer with Uber.

  • It Just Takes One Drink, So Plan Ahead – Impairment begins at the first drink. That means your ability to make safe decisions diminishes, and why the safest choice is to never drink and drive. Have a plan to get home before your night starts.
  • Get A Safe Ride With Uber Or Get A Designated Driver – Don’t take the chance. Leave the keys behind if you know you will be drinking.
  • New To Uber? Create Your Account Before You Leave The House – Don’t wait to sign up for Uber before going out. Here’s how to download the app and sign up for your first trip.

Uber conducted a survey with riders in the U.S. to ask how the company has helped them decide how to get home if they have been drinking. Among the findings, 90% say that Uber helps reduce drinking and driving. Further, 80% of respondents say that Uber has helped them personally avoid drinking and driving.

These responses highlight how we can get to zero fatalities, but there is still much more work to be done to encourage people to make the right decision before getting behind the wheel.

As we celebrate three years of partnership with MADD, we thank our partners for helping keep the roads safe this summer – and every day.
