Safety and Security through Selfies

Technology has become a significant part of our daily lives, ultimately influencing and improving everything we do. From the way we learn, to the way we work, it’s undeniable how much tech we’ve incorporated in order to accomplish various tasks in our daily lives.

It’s also a powerful tool that can improve safety and security in ways not possible before, and with riders and drivers in mind, we continually update our app to elevate our services. With Real-Time ID Check for drivers, we’re now using selfies as an added layer of protection for our app and this innovation benefits both our riders and drivers.

Real-time ID check is our latest security feature that helps us ensure that the driver using the app matches with the account we have on file. Using Microsoft’s Cognitive Services, drivers are periodically asked to share a selfie with Uber in order to log onto the app and start driving. We instantly compare this photo to the corresponding one on file and if the two photos don’t match, the account is temporarily suspended while we look into the matter further. This is just another example of how we explore features to improve the security on the app.

Following the initial US launch last September 2016, we are rolling out the feature across 16 countries — South Africa, Egypt, Russia, Bahrain, UAE, Qatar, India, Singapore, Australia, Indonesia, Chile, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Pakistan, and Philippines — on March 13, 2017.


 

 

How Real-Time ID Check Works:

  1. Drivers are asked periodically to take a selfie in the Uber app before they go online and accept rides.
  2. The photo taken by the driver is then compared to the one already on file with the account.
  3. If the two photos don’t match, the account is temporarily blocked while Uber representatives will look into the situation.

We’re always exploring new ways to strengthen technology-enabled security on the Uber app for both riders and drivers. Echoing our commitment to providing safe, reliable, and convenient rides, we at Uber are proactively reinforcing the use of technology to protect both riders and drivers by ensuring accounts are not compromised and the right person is behind the wheel.
