UN Women & Uber – A Vision For Equality

In 1995, world leaders followed a call by the United Nations and gathered in Beijing to produce an unprecedented plan for advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women everywhere.

Today, on the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, we are proud to share with the Uber community that we are embarking on a new global partnership with UN Women with the goal of accelerating economic opportunity for women. As part of our commitment to this goal, Uber will create 1,000,000 jobs for women as drivers on the Uber platform by 2020.

Women in Ontario are already taking advantage of the safe, flexible and equitable earning opportunities offered by the Uber platform. Read on as two top driver partners, Rachel and Esther, share their stories.

rachel Rachel has partnered with Uber since the early days of uberX in Toronto. About Uber, Rachel says: “I was looking for something to supplement my income, that was safe, fun and lucrative. It has helped me to develop more confidence in myself; the power to manage my life is exhilarating! Being able to decide when I work and how much I make, is very empowering and freeing, especially in an industry that is male dominated.”
Esther was looking for something that would allow her to earn money and interact with people. She wanted something that would feel rewarding, give her real joy and give her the flexibility and freedom to take off and travel when she wanted. Once she discovered Uber, she hasn’t looked back: “I view Uber as a service … bringing humans together, providing income, and … interacting with each other for moments that otherwise would not have been experienced.” esther
