Keep ridesharing in Alberta

Ridesharing is an increasingly important part of Alberta’s economy by providing flexible income opportunities and safe transportation for thousands of families. Over 150,000 Albertans have registered to ride and over 5,000 Albertans have registered to drive with Uber.

Unless the province acts before March 1st, ridesharing will no longer be able to continue operations in Alberta and drivers and riders will lose access to important income and transportation.

Here’s how the province can act now:

In January, Edmonton City Council passed new regulations to embrace ridesharing. Its bylaw referenced two issues that require provincial action before March 1st: driver’s licenses and a new ridesharing insurance product.

For several months we have worked with the provincial government on these two issues. Unfortunately, without positive action by the NDP Government, thousands of Albertans will lose income opportunities and tens of thousands will lose access to a much needed transportation option.

The province has an opportunity to ensure that riders and drivers still have access to ridesharing by making changes for driver licensing and a proposed insurance policy for ridesharing before March 1st. Their decision can help to ensure that thousands of families continue to have access to income they sorely need.
