Making Canadian Roads Safer: As Uber Use Goes Up, DUIs Go Down

Making a responsible choice when it comes to drinking and driving can save lives. In Canada, drunk driving claims almost 1,500 lives and causes over 64,000 injuries each year. We know that ridesharing is having a significant impact in driving down these heartbreaking statistics in cities around the world by providing people with a safe, reliable alternative to getting behind the wheel.

Take California, for example – drunk driving crashes fell by 60 per month among drivers under 30 in the cities where we operate. And we’re seeing the same sort of positive impact in Canadian cities.

In order to show how much Uber’s entry into Canadian markets has reduced local DUI rates, we compared the number of Uber requests against the number of alcohol-related incidents across Canada between the hours of 5 AM and 5 PM from January to June 2015.

Every city differs, but we find that this data strongly suggests that there is a relationship between people’s decision to drink and drive and increased transit options.

With the increased transportation options that Uber brings to cities, we are also helping to ensure we are providing a safe, reliable and affordable ride home – available to anyone, especially late at night when drunk driving is most common and can be avoided.

Just a few months ago we took to the streets with UberSAFE to raise awareness of the importance of making the right choice, and just how easy it is for Canadian riders to leave their keys after a night out and get home safely with Uber.

Please remember to drink responsibly this long-weekend, and we’re here if you need a safe ride home!
