Behind the Wheel in Edmonton: Meet Karen
As part of offering safe and reliable rides, Uber is helping create new opportunities to earn that didn’t exist before. Uber driver partners are central to the success we’ve seen in Edmonton and across the world; and we thought you’d enjoy finding out more.
While many of our partners drive full time, others drive to supplement their income. Today, we’re going Behind the Wheel with Karen to learn more about why she chose to drive in Edmonton. Read on to find out how you can take advantage of the safe and flexible earning opportunities offered by the Uber platform.
Why did you decide to partner with Uber?
When I saw the Uber driver ad posting, I had just left a part-time job, and having not previously heard of Uber, was intrigued by the opportunity. I have a full-time career with regular hours, so the flexibility really appealed to me. I also really appreciate Uber’s consistent commitment to excellent customer service, as it aligns well with my own values.
Why do you enjoy driving with Uber?
When riders ask me why I drive with Uber, I tell them: I love people, I love my car, and I love driving — it’s the ideal job for me! I enjoy meeting new people, and visiting with riders and making them feel welcome and cared for in my car is part of the service.
What’s the best ride you’ve provided?
I met a young man who works part time and during our fairly long first ride, from work on the south side to his home in the far north of the city, we talked about career and education, and some of the family realities that currently inform these areas of his life. He’s become a fairly regular rider and I enjoy his company. Because my career is in post-secondary education, I was able to encourage him concerning some available options, and he just recently let me know that he got an acceptance letter from his university of choice!
Is driving on the platform a good option for women?
I think Uber is an excellent option for women. Many of my riders have said they feel really safe with a female driver, and as a driver, I’ve never felt unsafe, as I don’t have to handle payments, cash or otherwise. And the wide-open flexibility around Uber’s available online hours is ideal for women who are caregivers to family members young, old and everywhere in between.
Do you have any tips for fellow driver partners?
If you consider the things you appreciate in a ride and extend that to your guests, you can expect they will be happy with your service, because they will feel like you’ve cared for them by taking their needs into consideration. I often think: I’m helping someone else’s child get home safely; that’s a big responsibility and one I don’t take lightly!
