Last night, we partnered with Norwegian superstar Kygo for a surprise show in Chicago where lucky Uber riders were able to request the special ‘KYGO’ view to get into the concert and fans all over the world were able to tune in through our Periscope account as Kygo took to the stage to debut his new single “Nothing Left” live for the very first time!

We caught up with Kygo backstage for the inside scoop on his new single and his next destination.
How did you get your start in music? How did you transition from being classically trained in piano to producing your own music?
I began taking piano lessons when I was 6 years old and continued to play the piano for over 10 years. In that time I started composing some melodies on my own but it wasn’t until I heard Avicii on the radio that I really became inspired and transitioned into electronic music. I was really intrigued by his simple yet incredible melodies and his style prompted me to set up a little home studio where I taught myself how to produce my own music. After school I would go home, get into a music-making zone and would stay up super late each night trying to create the perfect song.
What inspires you?
I find huge inspiration by just listening to different pieces of music that are out there no matter the genre. Sometimes I’ll hear a track and discover new elements that really speak to me – could be a beat or melody. I like to focus on those pieces that really inspire me and find interesting ways to incorporate them into my own music.
The vocals featuring Will Heard on your newest track integrate so well with the instrumentals — What’s your process when creating a song?
Awhile back I heard Will’s voice and really liked it, so last summer we got into the studio and talked about an idea that he had. We jammed and recorded some vocals and when he was done, I played around and added various textures and layers to compliment the vocals.
With this single I really experimented with some new stuff so it’s a little slower and not my signature sound. It’s a little different, but I’m super happy with the way it turned out and how this track developed.
What is your pre-performance ritual?
I’m a pretty low-key guy so I don’t really have one! I make sure to do a sound check before performing and aways have towel, but that’s about it.
What was your breakthrough moment?
It’s difficult to pin down exactly one moment. I’d say when I got to replace Avicii on the Mainstage at TomorrowWorld after he had to drop out was a pretty special moment, especially considering the type of music I make didn’t used to be associated with main stages. Releasing my first original single, ‘Firestone’ was also a pretty incredible thing for me.
Where do you see yourself next year?
I hope that I am doing the same thing as I am now – traveling around the world, making more music and performing for my fans!
Anything else we should know or you would like to share?
I hope you check out the new track “Nothing Left” and let me know what you think of it! Oh and watch out for my new album coming out later this year.
