Uber & Urban List Melbourne #UBERURBANCITY
The Urban List is the go-to for everything worth eating, drinking, buying, booking and doing in Melbourne. Everything they cover is worth checking out (who’s got the time for average anything these days?!) and it’s all delivered with a sense of humour. Think of them as your friend in the know—the one that tips you off about the latest hidden cocktail bar or the best brunch in town.
Over the next few week’s we’re putting the Urban List Melbourne team in the driver’s seat of @Uber_VIC for #UBERURBANCITY. Tell us a little more about our new friends in the know.
I’m Clare – one half of The Urban List’s Communications Executive team. If it’s advice on where to find the best craft beer, small-batch scotch and Texan BBQ in Melbourne that you’re after, then you’ve come to the right person! You’re most likely to find me wandering around the Northside’s bars and art spaces, or on a bicycle.
Jess is our National Marketing Manager, who is a whiz when it comes to whipping up genius marketing plans and also just so happens to be a pro in the DIY breakfast department (trust us, her bircher is epic). If you need a fitness pal who’s not going to cancel on that 6am spin class, it’s Jess.
Pip is our Content Manager here in Melbourne, so oversees everything that finds its way onto The Urban List. She’s almost as crazy about punctuation as she is about cats, and is the go-to for tips on where to find the latest luxury brunch.
Communications Exec no. 2, Iro, is our in-house authority on fashion, beauty and dining trends. She works wonders with copy and is the one to talk to if you’re looking for recommendations of the latest pampering treatments or where to pick up a limited edition sneaker.
What makes Melbourne the best city in Australia?
Melbourne’s got a unique mix of high and low culture that other major cities don’t have, which makes it an amazing melting pot, full of fresh ideas. You’ll find gourmet restaurants and hidden-gem dive bars, world-class art galleries and DIY fashion shows, small-batch food and drinks producers, new venues popping up on a weekly basis…There’s never a dull day!
URBAN LIST MELBOURNE’S TOP 3 LIST
Bar Exuberante, run by cocktail genius Matt Bax, is an incredible hidden drinks lounge that feels like stepping into a Wes Anderson film. It seats less than 20 people and doesn’t take bookings, but the theatrical drinks and incredible interior make it worth the gamble.
Whisky and Alement is a fantastic CBD bar for those hunting for the best whisky selection in Melbourne. And where there’s great whisky, there’s great people…
Fitzroy institution The Standard is a cracking pub hidden within the suburbs side streets. The outdoor courtyard is perfect for group get-togethers and they pull a mean pint of Guinness.
If you’re looking for one of the best brunches in Melbourne, look no further than Fitzroy roastery Industry Beans. Their kitchen serves up some of the most creative dishes in the city—the compressed watermelon is an absolute must—and the coffee is top notch.
North Melbourne’s Auction Rooms is worth a visit for the interior alone! Their brioche French toast with crispy bacon and poached rhubarb is to die for—get there early on the weekends to avoid the queues.
I’d wager my last flat white on earth that Albert Park’s Kettle Black serves the most beautiful dishes in Melbourne. This place works wonders with wholesome ingredients, subtle flavours and edible flowers. One not to be missed.
Situated right next to Carlton Gardens, Epocha is definitely where I’d choose to max out the credit card on a foodie splurge. The slow-cooked lamb shoulder is a treat, as are the potatoes roasted in duck fat (!).
Japanese institution Isakaya Den serves up modern Japanese cuisine with a hint of the traditional. A great date spot if you’re both sake and sashimi fans.
BBQ fans, look no further! The Gem Bar & Restaurant is the only place I trust for a meat feast where the side dishes match the caliber of the juicy, meaty goodness on offer. The mac’n’cheese comes dusted with bacon crumbs and the set BBQ menu will leave you full for days.
You can’t talk about Melbourne without talking about the footie! Having been to my fare share of sports stadiums the world over, the MCG holds a firm place in my heart and is a top recommendation for a weekend outing. Just make sure you’re in brown and gold, yeah? (Go Hawks.)
ACMI (the Australian Centre for Moving Image) at Fed Square is a fantastic gallery, complete with cinemas, interactive exhibits and a cracking shop for picking up some film finds. I’m counting down the days until the David Bowie exhibition opens this July.
Although not strictly speaking in Melbourne, proximity to the Mornington Peninsula is definitely up there with my top things to do in the city. Expert wineries, delicious restaurants, beautiful scenery, and the Peninsula Hot Springs. What more do you want?!
Three things to pack for a weekend away in Melbourne
A decent umbrella (it’s true what they say about Melbourne weather…), a tonne of draped black clothing (especially if we’re brunching on Gertrude Street), and a couple of Berocca to help with the recovery from checking out Melbourne’s epic cocktail scene!
Your best Uber experience?
I love sharing the wonders of Uber with friends for the first time. My favourite Uber experience was introducing a mate to the tracker map and watching him marvel at the tiny moving car icon. It’s the little things in life, hey?
