Dubai just went Uber
Dubai has long been a place of great contrast: stunning skylines amidst vast desert dunes, the world’s hottest nightclubs next to traditional Arab souks, and a palm tree island in the middle of the ocean. The Emirate has grown from a sleepy afterthought to the crossroads of the world. And today, things got even sweeter when Uber began testing in Dubai, marking our entry into our first market in the Middle East!
Riz Khan, TV host, international journalist and best-selling author, caught wind of Uber’s arrival and scooped up the first ride in the Emirates. He opened his iPhone in Downtown Dubai and requested a ride; just a few minutes later, his chauffeur Naser arrived in his BMW 7-Series to take Riz away in style.

But it’s also no secret that getting around is not always a pleasant experience; that’s why we can’t be more excited to be here.

Today, we are excited to announce that Uber will give $5.5M to support a new robotics faculty chair as well as three fellowships at CMU. This gift is part of a partnership we announced earlier this year. In addition, we’re pumped to be part of a growing innovation ecosystem in Pittsburgh that includes world leading research institutions and companies, as well as an increasing number of start-ups.
